Mannheim

Mannheim lies in the northwest of the state Baden-Württemberg. It is the third largest city in the state after Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. The city is part of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, in which a total of around 2.3 million people live.

In the Second World War the city was heavily destroyed. The reconstruction of the city centre was based on the architecture of the 50s. The grid-shaped street system has been preserved and has given the town the nickname Square Town. Today, Mannheim is known for its parks, which were laid out on the occasion of the Federal Garden Show in 1975, for its music scene (including the Pop Academy) and for the multicultural character of many districts.

The baroque castle from the 18th century houses historical exhibits as well as the University of Mannheim. On the market square in the strictly grid-shaped inner city, the so-called Mannheim Squares, there is a baroque fountain monument with statues. The pedestrian zone Planken leads to the southeast to the Romanesque water tower on the garden Friedrichsplatz with its Art Nouveau elements.
